It depends on what kind of practice you are referring to. The government regulates those who call themselves counselors or therapists. To become a state accredited counselor or psychotherapist requires about 8 years of expensive studies in conventional psychology, and most psychologists operate under auspice of psychiatrists who administer drugs for a large variety of issues. If you are looking for a guarantee of a job (which many therapists are not happy with because the effectiveness is so questionable) or if you feel it is worth sticking out 8 years and all the money you pay, something like $80,000, then by all means go that direction. Actually, I deeply appreciate those who suffer conventional education and then set out to transform it. People like Deepak Chopra and Robert Holden are doing this. From my point of view this is a very challenging path, but still an honorable one.
We offer you a much more direct path to helping people in your most passionate way, and doing this within one year for about a 1/10th the cost. You will not call yourself a counselor or a therapist even though your work will include kinds of counseling and be highly therapeutic. You will call yourself a kind of Coach of the expertise you get most passionate about. There are hundreds of choices like a Happiness Recovery Coach, or Intuitive Guidance Coach. We promise if you are accepted and fully participate, week by week, you will be building your practice and making money doing what you love before you graduate.
Our program prepares you to work in almost any kind of situation where people need counseling, coaching, and healing. However we are unable to prepare you legally to work in hospitals, clinics, schools, and other institutions. Most of our students go through our program to be entrepreneurs as healers and/or coaches.
The second largest industry in the United States (behind Information Technology) is coaching. Coaching is an exploding business because more and more people have lost trust in the corporate world. They are learning to trust their intuitive connection with other people better than just someone with professional credentials. If you are a slightly more awakened person, you will likely give more credibility to someone who healed his or herself of cancer than an oncologist who is just doing what he is told to do, likely chemo, radiation, and surgery. As the collective consciousness of our society increases, the corporate world where people are just taking orders without question is being replaced by people who are thinking for themselves, doing their own research, and trusting their own experiences. To be a successful coach, you will need to believe in yourself, your knowledge and wisdom from your own experiences, and this turns out to be your biggest gift to humanity. Essentially the better you get at simply being yourself, the more you will have to offer the world. Your authentic happiness is the highest credential. You will find out how this works in our program.
Thank goodness the coaching industry is not regulated by the government, because regulations tend to limit creativity and innovation.
So the final answer is a NO, you do not need a state license to have a holistic practice as long as you do not call yourself a counselor or therapist. If you are determined to be a state licensed therapist or counselor, you will have to go through all the schooling I mentioned regardless if you do our program or not.
Even after all that schooling, we get some licensed counselors and therapists who go through our program to greatly increase the effectiveness of their work.
Sorry, we do not have federal student aid available- yet. We are working to have some kind of financial aid for students in the future.
For now I have this to say… I believe – when there is divine will, there is a way! I managed to complete a similar program that was 3 times as expensive. When I committed to doing it, I had no money at the time, but then inexpensive rent and a good job showed up that paid my intuition month by month. My angels wanted me in that program which changed my life! If you feel the same about our program, I trust you will be fully supported.
We do not have a slower program or an intense study during the summer. The program is already super concentrated. Many students do our program successfully while working full time, and a significant portion of them pull it off in one year. You may succeed in one year, but if not, you will have nothing to lose. You will be able to pick up your studies where you left off on the following year. Often slower students have the added advantage of having integrated the learning more completely. So, if you will do your best and trust your pace, you can not go “wrong.” There are even a number of classes you can still take if you already know you wouldn’t be graduating in one year. All of the classes labeled as “open to drop-ins” will still be available to take even if your pace is slower than the present class. So you have one, two, or even three years to complete our program, and either way it can be perfect according to your timing. So far, over the years, all students who have applied themselves eventually pass our program, but our pace is not for everybody in one year. About 20% need another year to complete. You will not know how you will do with our pace until you enter the program to find out. Just remember, you can not really fail if you keep putting one foot in front of the other in your best timing that keeps your life in balance.

A: Yes we all want to move forward with our goals, and when we feel frustrated the answer may not be in doing more. At UMS we often say, “The issue is how we see the issue.”
Please consider the following distinction. There are two main orientations that people live their lives from:
- The Horizontal Goal Line of getting from A to B.
- The vertical Learning Line that raises our consciousness.
While on the Goal Line, we are concerned about our survival and getting ahead in the world. As our consciousness is primarily on reaching goals, we develop a kind of linear tunnel vision. We become so focused on getting there, that we are no longer fully here for our loved ones, and much less to ourselves. Discord often ensues, and then we later wonder why we cannot actualize real success and fulfillment.
What is the point of all the doing? Whatever we accomplish on the goal line does not stay with us when we leave this physical plane.
At UMS we are looking for students who are committed to life long learning, but not the kind of learning that entails cramming your mind with more information. We mean inner learning, learning from your wise and all knowing “Inner Counselor.”
For example, when one asks, “How can I learn from this situation I put myself in?,” one opens the door to the Magic each present moment has to offer.
I first shifted my orientation from the Goal Line to the Learning Line in the most dramatic way when I was 17 years old . I was “living in the fast lane” attempting to reach my goals at “breakneck speed” until I had a motorcycle wreck that put me on my back in the hospital for three months. Three months of doing nothing is a long time for anyone, and more so for a teenager with raging hormones. At first it was very painful for me to give up all my Summer plans, but over time, I learned how to be happy in my own skin. When I walked out of that hospital, I was completely changed, as I felt such a deep appreciation to be simply alive.
Miraculously everything I touched seemed to turn to gold. My school grades shot up, and I became so creative in ceramics, photography, and writing, that I won awards. I was’t trying to get ahead, I was just enjoying my creativity in each present moment. My heart was also open enough to fall in love with the professional model girl of my high school.
Here’s the amazing paradox. Being primarily focused on the Goal Line eventually leads to losing it all, as we eventually burn out and get sick. By keeping our primary focus on our inner learning of how to be a healthier and happier people, we become magnets for the success of all our dreams coming true, and this soul evolution work stays with us!
Friend, you do not have to wait for a crisis to shift your life to constant learning and soul growth. When we can accept that our purpose IS to learn and grow, living in constant grace, ease, and abundance becomes possible.
“Seek The kingdom within and all else shall be handed to you.”
At UMS we assist you with keeping your primary attention on your Inner Learning for 12 months, so you will give birth to your real Purpose for being on the planet.
Our program is based upon having a profound paradigm shift from doing, to realizing and expressing the Love, Wisdom and Power of your BEING. Our students say UMS “is school as it was always meant to be” because it empowers each person’s unique creative calling to naturally serve be simply being their amazing selves.
A: Yes. The faculty of UMS are excited to have students who are committed to graduating as Spiritual Psychology Counselors, Holistic Healing Practitioners, and Life Empowerment Coaches AND to have students attend our program who come solely for their own personal growth and life mastery. Therefore, students do not have to do the extra work of becoming certified for any of the 5 certification options, and they can choose their own university approved Masters Thesis Special Project that is their unique creative expression that makes a difference in their own life and the world. For example, some students may use the tools they learned to lose weight and get fit, or to develop the confidence and support to start their singing career, or write a book.
A: No. Graduating from UMS will teach you how to be a happier person and how to be an effective and successful holistic practitioner whether you receive the Masters degree or not. Those who don’t qualify for the masters degree will receive a Certificate of Completion worthy of framing. After graduation, you can still call yourself a graduate of the Uuniversity of Mount Shasta, a Spiritual Psychology Coach, Life Success Coach, and Holistic Healer. You can also still be certified in any of the 6 certification options.
At this time in 2017, it appears the University of Mount Shasta (UMS) and the University of Santa Monica (USM) are perhaps the only colleges of Spiritual Psychology in the world. How do these two programs compare? The following obviously biased information comes from myself being a very proud graduate of the University of Santa Monica as well as being the proud President of University of Mount Shasta.
I refuse to say our program is better. I can not say I know what is best for each individual. I rather see it like apples to oranges, even though I have done my best to improve on the program I went through, to offer much more value for the money and time.
Here is the short version that I will expand on below. USM has the best facility in Los Angeles for easy access and 40 year reputation for their life changing program. UMS has a smaller beautiful facility in the Spiritual vortex of Mount Shasta with only 5 years under our belt. Most of that time we have been in the developmental stages continuously learning what the greatest need is in the holistic fields and how to teach it. Sadly, USM no longer offers a master degree. UMS does offer a legal Masters degree that is not yet accredited by a government approved accrediting agency. USM teaches only Spiritual Psychology for life transformation in one 500 class hour year. UMS teaches Spiritual Psychology, Holistic Healing, and Life Coaching in one 550 class-hour year. In addition UMS offers two additional certifications that are required to graduate: Certified Accelerated Healing Practitioner and Certified Life Coach of the specialty you choose (one out of hundreds of choices). UMS is committed to you discovering your unique mission as a holistic practitioner and doing it successfully. Now you can continue reading if you like for the long version…
The University of Santa Monica is the standard that has proven itself over and over with thousands of empowered graduates including myself. This program was the greatest gift I ever gave myself, initiated the most profound transformation of my life, and I had already been on the spiritual path for decades beforehand. As I listened to, interactive with, and learned with Ron and Mary Hulnick, senior faculty of USM for 2 years, I knew in my deepest heart that I wanted to do close to the the same kind of thing with a soul mate, yet at the time I was single and had many issues to heal. Pursuing this big of a goal challenged me to do a tremendous amount of work on myself, to heal my unhealthy patterns and more fully open my heart to be able to attract a soul mate into my life. USM gave me the tools and skills to do this. When I graduated in 2004 I was finally solidly on the path to healing my emotional body (which had been previously lagging behind -crippling my life progress in so many ways) but I had not a clue how to translate this inner work into making a living as a counselor. California law does not allow it, and insurance does not support it.
So, I invested another year and thousands of dollars more on learning how to be a Life Coach. After graduating from the world renowned Coaches Training Institute, I started a successful coaching practice. While counseling is focused on helping people heal their issues, coaching helps people follow through with actualizing their dreams into reality. I believe the coaching industry is experiencing exploding growth because most of us did not receive the support and encouragement to follow our unique path of fulfillment when we grew up. Being coached is a big key to life success for many people. Doing what one has been told to do, to give-up exploring their unique creative passion in order to be a prosperous professional has become a dead-end path for a great many. Studies indicate 80 to 90 percent of westerners dislike their jobs. Coaches help people shift their lives from living from the outside-in (doing what society expects of them) to discovering how to bring their inner passion out into the world and make a profit at it.
Instead of only educating students in Spiritual Psychology, and have them feel like a “deer in headlights,” as I did upon graduation when confronted with how to make a living at this, I have included thorough practical learning of Life Success Coaching in our program geared to supporting students with exactly how to attract clients and build their practice. In our school, all students launch their holistic practice attracting paying clients BEFORE they graduate! I offer what I had wished I had received for a fraction of the price!
I thought that would be enough for us to offer in our program, but while living here in Mount Shasta my wife Maqua and I stumbled upon healing methods that are so miraculously effective, we had to include them in the program. We call this work Accelerated Healing.
Accelerated Healing is so miraculous, it has become our most popular class. Students begin making money as Certified Accelerated Healing Practitioners midway through the masters program. We also notice a natural progression with our clients, who first come in the door to heal a “red line” issue. Sadly it often takes a real crisis before many people will finally look for support. Accelerated Healing often offers that unmistakable miracle in the moment, and thus builds trust. This growing client-healer rapport often leads to the client’s deeper exploration of their self-healing and spiritual awakening – which spiritual psychology provides. Finally, after receiving much healing and support many clients often love being coached with discovering how to manifest their dream life and successful actualization of their life purpose.
I know it sounds almost unbelievable, but we actually teach all this in 12 months. While at University of Santa Monica students go to school one weekend each month, at UMS we have school almost every weekend for 8 months, then follow with weekly Coaching for 4 months. Our school is for those people who have decided to learn all they need to know about holistic healing, counseling and coaching, and get on with launching their practice in one year. We can teach so fast because our practical method of education is so effective for those who are authentically motivated to apply themselves. Those who cannot continue on this accelerated learning path (for whatever reason) are usually given the opportunity to take a leave of absence from the program and then return where they left off at a later year.
UMS is less expensive. Why are we offering a 550 hour program for only $6,500, 8,500, or $11,000 depending upon the students income level? ? Because I am a firm believer education and health care should be affordable for almost anyone, and everyone of our whole society should share this financial responsibility. Everyone deserves to be healthy and have the education of their choice, and if we all willingly pool our resources this is not hard to co-create. (We hope to have scholarship funds available in the future.)
A: Instead of emphasizing psychic ability, we help you develop your intuition that comes from your all knowing higher mind. We have learned over the years that even with the best intentions psychic readings can disempower people more than help them. For example, predicting one’s future can pull the rug out of their creativity. Our Intuition and Spiritual Channeling classes teach methods of divination that are truly empowering because we help the client connect with their own inner knowing and creative power to change their outcome.

Students have come here on faith, without a place to stay. While we do not recommend this, on every occasion they eventually found a place. Also, camping is still good in October, for those who are into this.
A: Yes and no. The University of Mount Shasta is nationally accredited with the American Association of Drugless Practitioners and the Better Business Bureau. Is our accreditation state approved? No. At this time the State government sees us as offering a legal degree that is not accredited. It is a good thing that educational democracy does exist in the United States, although government accreditation can be a challenge when something new is being presented.
We are on the path of State Accreditation (however long it takes) , and we expect to be the first college in the world to offer a doctorate in Spiritual Psychology within the next 3 to 5 years.
We believe there will be a day when Holistic Healing and Spiritual Psychology will be accredited, as the government merely reflects the will of the majority of people in a democracy. I believe there will be a day people will laugh about how their used to be a medical system that did not recognize holistic healing and a psychology that did not recognize the soul.
The word “psyche” in the dictionary, means “breath, principle of life, Spirit, Soul.” But “psychology,” means “the science of mind and behavior. Some how Soul, Breath,Life, and Spirit) were lost in translation. It is only a matter of time that this error of understanding will be corrected and Spiritual Psychology will be considered the real psychology because it is so effective. For example, when we realize that we are not human beings having a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings having a human experience, our paradigm shift automatically begins to liberate us from our human issues.
If we were to shut our doors and wait for government accreditation, spiritual psychology would never become available because no one would know what it is. If we are to earn accreditation, we must boldly show up and prove the value of this life changing work.
We believe our success in our field is determined mainly by how much value we receive from the education itself. Most graduates agree, the beautiful diploma they take home is far less important than the skills they learned, as their lives transformed so dramatically– to more intimate relationships, and to thriving at helping others.
Conventional psychology studies gets students in-debt about $50 to $100,000. Our college takes only 8 months and costs $5,000. We have taken out so much unnecessary information, like that about drug therapies, redundant scientific method. Our methods are simple, direct, and amazingly effective, and every graduate knows exactly how to help others and how to attract clients without persuasion.
As our reputation grows some counseling centers are already employing UMS students and graduates, however most UMS students do not care to be involved in the system where their creative freedom is limited. They come here to learn how to be successful with starting their own holistic practice. Because they are not in debt, they can charge less than other conventional counselors and still make a good living.
To make my point…. 30 Years ago, I received my bachelors degree in Forestry. Instead of Forestry at the time I was also contemplating getting a degree in Environmental Science, which at that time was a brand new field. Environmental science seemed too risky… “The world did not care enough about the environment to be able to make any money at it,” was my negative judgment––that turned out to be totally wrong. Environmental Science turned out to be one of the most demanded high paying fields to this day.
Well I am so glad I later changed my profession to spiritual psychology because spiritual psychology is now at where Environmental science was. This is where demand is growing the most. No longer are we, the spiritual oriented considered outcasts. Spiritual Psychology is now a buzz word getting more and more positive attention. Even some conventional programs are starting to incorporate it more because people are demanding it. My point here is that if you are into Spiritual Psychology –so will your clients. They will want to see you just because you are not conventional and spiritual oriented. For years Spiritual Psychology has been totally off the radar. Now days its becoming the new psychology that most self help books base their principles upon. By choosing this profession you will be on the leading edge of the counseling field, of practicing and teaching the psychology of happiness. This is where the field of psychology is really going. Come to our school and you will become a happiness expert.
A: For some individual classes, yes. To complete the whole Masters program in one year, students must begin on time in October. After our October classes, we no not accept any more students for that year’s masters class.
A: Yes… Many of the Masters classes can be attended by drop-ins who want to heal or transform a certain issue in their life or learn a certain modality – like our most popular – Accelerated Healing. See the Courses to discover which classes you can drop into.
However, we would like you to consider this: From our experience over the years, the number one reason people lack success as holistic practitioners is because they have many trapped emotions and unhealed memories. By going through our WHOLE program (especially the spiritual psychology portion) you will do the inner work to get truly feel free enough to come out as a holistic practitioner in an authentic way.
Your Mighty I AM Presence is your individualized Spiritual Perfection that can be realized and actualized in your outer life in grand ways – as various ascended masters have already demonstrated – such as Gandhi, Jesus, Mother Mary, Lord Buddha, and thousands of others. Jesus said, ” These things I have done, you shall do in a greater way.”
Who you identify yourself to be has a huge impact on your life, as the infinite love, wisdom, and power of your Mighty I AM Presence follows your thoughts, beliefs. and feelings. If you believe you are a sinner, you are going to find yourself making a lot of “bad mistakes” and condemning yourself a lot for this. If you believe you are a Blessing from God, you will find your thoughts, words and actions making the world a better place. We say the words “I AM that Mighty I AM Presence,” to identify with our authentic Love, Wisdom, and Power to accomplish anything, and by doing so our lives move into harmonious perfection.
For example, many years ago I was a gardener who pulled weeds and pushed a lawn mower, and I wanted to be landscaper that can design and construct gardens. One day I decided, “I am a landscaper,” knowing I would learn everything I needed to build beautiful gardens. After a handful of days of proclaiming, “I AM a Landscaper!”, I began receiving multi-thousand dollar jobs, and joyously did this profession for the following 19 years.
I once knew a woman who always proclaimed she was sick even though the doctors couldn’t find anything. But she kept proclaiming, “I AM sick, “until the doctors finally found physical evidence. Unaware of our I AM Perfection, we believe we are products of our outer conditions without much power to change our circumstances. The I AM Teachings remind us that the only true power in the Universe comes from with-in, from our Spirit within expressing through our thoughts, words, and feelings. If we express, “I AM Perfect Health” through our thoughts, words, and feelings, and refuse to believe in our learned human thoughts of limitation, we shall find our health restoring itself to its original perfection.
We have a world of suffering because people have become identified to their outer human conditions and thus forget who they really are. While our religions teach God is separate from us, our doctors tells us that our diseases are incurable, and schools give the impression our unique ideas and creative expression doesn’t matter much, the I AM teachings remind us of our Perfection now.
We are taught the outer world is the “real world,” when the opposite is really true. Living from the outside in (trying to cope or survive) is an un-fulfilling dead end road. Most of us have walked this path through the college of “hard knocks.” We resurrect our perfect lives as we remember how to live from the inside out, for really we were designed in the image of our Creator as powerful Creator Beings beyond measure.
If you are ready to stop playing small in order to survive, step out of your human comfort zone to play at 125 percent to fully THRIVE, then UMS is likely your perfect school. We are committed to your thriving as a Spiritual Psychology Counselor who successfully empowers others.
Students should plan on about 21 hours of work per week: 7 hours live class or video to watch, 7 hours interaction with other students, and 7 hours of reading and writing exercises.
